CHRISTINA THWAITES

‘My work explores the places and faces around me - familiar and banal subject matter, but relevant. The context and location of where I reside at the time is reflected, and having moved a lot– my practice has been a means of connecting myself to location and people.   I work a lot with photocopies and photographs and often make many drawings from them before painting, in order to ‘get inside’ the subject and move away from the source image.   I have become increasingly interested in using basic printing techniques within my paintings, I like the ambiguity and concepts related to this visual ‘game’.   My aim is to encourage an individual’s interaction and conversation with my work without dictating too much.’   Christina Thwaites (1980) is a British painter, based in Orono, Maine, (USA). In 2004 she graduated from The University of Edinburgh (Scotland, UK) with an MA in French Literature & History of Art. Whilst living in Paris she attended the Ecole du Louvre and worked as an assistant to watercolourist Patrick Fouilhoux.

Her painting skills developed in Italy where she attended La Porta Blu Art School in Rome. During 2010, she worked for some months in Amsterdam (at Kanal 10 Guest studio) and also in Walasiho (a remote village in Sulawesi, Indonesia). In 2011 Christina exhibited in Rome including the MACRO (Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome). In 2013 she moved to Canberra (Australia) and was offered studio space at ANCA (Australian National Capital Artists) -she continued to exhibit in Europe (with two solo shows: in London and Rome. She also had a joint show with British Pop artist Peter Blake). She moved to Maine in 2015 and after a break in exhibiting to have two children, and now finds herself working with Maine and international galleries as well as various community art projects and also teaches from her studio.
