Judy Blundell
is an experienced visual artist working primarily in the mediums of oil
painting and drawing with emphasis on natural landscapes. “I believe that the
arts act as the barometer of the world around us. Creative expression will document the events
of our times and as a painter I am honored to be part of this process.”
Judy’s
radiant oil paintings depict stark contrasts with exquisite beauty. Blundell has tackled many subjects, included
portraiture, still life, and symbolic imagery, but it is in her landscapes and
abstracts that she fully explores the idea of powerful forces coming together
and apart. She paints the edges of
nature: where cold air meets heat, where sea meets land, or even simply what
she calls “the seamless harmony of sky meeting the horizon.” Change is her subject, but also just this
very harmony, where energies work together rather than at odds.
She lays
down thick layers of paint with an assured hand, never opting for vagueness of
softness on important texture.
Scale is important – many of her works stretch to several feet long in order to enhance the panorama-like perspective and emphasize space. Her palette is sensitive to the nuances of natural light in all kinds of atmospheres, but she is unafraid to pursue vivid color where necessary. She was born in Wisconsin but lived in Australia for 17 years. She currently splits her time between Texas and Maine.
