Experience Downeast Maine

On the leading edge of the USA, along the rugged coast of Maine, as far north and east you can go in the USA, is the first light to touch the United States.  Eastport, a small eclectic town, has a magic to it.  Located on the Bay of Fundy known for the highest tidal ranges in the world with tides approaching 60 ft.  Eastport's tidal ranges can be as much as 26 ft with the world changing before your eyes every 6 hours.  What you experience at high tide becomes an entirely new world 6 hours later at low tide.

Add in the dotted islands, whales, seals, eagles, assorted wildlife, wide open sunrises with the incredible light it offers, and the numerous opportunities to explore the rocky coast via boat or a casual walk through town.  There is the added adventure of exploring the Canadian Maritimes just 1 mile across the harbor, all of which provides a perfect place to immerse yourself you a week long photography class aimed at providing new experiences and an opportunity to refine your craft and create new work for a photo essay of your trip

Week long immersion classes may include the following depending on the particular season class and what nature provides us:

  • Class meeting space in the heart of downtown located near restaurants, brew pubs, wine bar, coffee shop, bagel shop, bike rental, grocery store, and galleries all within a short walk.
  • Watch the working waterfront come alive each day with lobster boats, scallop boats, USCG rescue vessels, and fishing vessels.
  • 7 days exploring the Maine and Canadian coast in the Bay of Fundy known for the worlds highest tidal ranges.
  • Boat excursions in the Bay of Fundy to various islands in New Brunswick Canada as seasons and weather allows
  • Explore Campobello island in Canada with several lighthouses, and the Eisenhower International Peace Park.
  • Explore the small and inviting town of St. Andrews, New Brunswick, CA.
  • Boat trip in Bay of Fundy allowing opportunity to see whales, seals, eagles, pulling lobster traps, and lighthouses from a  water view
  • Select 2 images from your body of work during the week and learn to mount and mat the fine art prints we make for you to be displayed during the art show and reception.
  • Learn about installations in a gallery as you prepare your work for a showing.
  • The large 2 fine art prints of your work are yours to keep.
  • Gallery Reception to show your work and allow you to experience a gallery showing, interacting with art viewers and sharing what was the catalyst to create the image.

Meet the instructor

Greg is a professional mariner and a willing prisoner of the sea.  There is a direct connection and appreciation that develops and Greg tries to provide a glimpse of this connection we all have with nature in his images. His work at sea has provided the opportunity to see many amazing places in this world.  Every time he returns home he is reminded that you do not have to travel the world to find opportunities to capture amazing images. Opportunities surround us if we just take a few moments to slow down in this world full of motion and capture what is happening around us in that very moment. Despite being a professional mariner, Greg says small simple boats is where all the fun and joy is. Kayaking, rowing, sailing, or just putting around. Just you and nature.

Greg is owner of the Full Fathom Five Gallery with his wife Carol. He has 2 books scheduled to be released this year. Frozen Hands- documenting the life of scallop fisherman in Maine, published in May followed by    Sea Smoke scheduled release in December 2023.
